Monsoon Pet Care in Bengaluru: Keeping Your Pet Healthy This Rainy Season

Dog walking on a rainy Bengaluru street

Every year, the same pattern shows up in our OPD the moment Bengaluru's rains set in: more ticks, more upset stomachs, more skin infections, and more anxious calls from pet parents who aren't sure if what they're seeing is normal. Most monsoon health issues in pets are preventable with a few consistent habits — this guide walks through exactly what to watch for and what to do about it.

Why the rainy season is harder on pets

Damp fur, standing water and humidity create ideal conditions for fungal and bacterial growth on skin, while wet ground brings pets into closer contact with parasites, contaminated puddles and mud that can carry infectious organisms. Pets that spend time outdoors — walks, gardens, terraces — are affected the most, but even indoor pets are at higher risk from humidity-related skin and ear issues.

Quick rule of thumb: if your pet has been outdoors in the rain, a full towel-dry within 15–20 minutes, with special attention to paws, ears and belly, prevents the majority of monsoon skin and ear problems we see.

1. Paw and skin care

Wet paws left untreated are the single biggest cause of monsoon vet visits we see. Fungal infections between the toes show up as redness, a musty smell, or constant licking at the paws.

  • Dry paws and the belly thoroughly after every walk, including between the toes
  • Trim excess fur around the paw pads so moisture doesn't get trapped
  • Avoid walking pets through visibly stagnant puddles where possible
  • Check weekly for redness, flaking or a sour smell on skin folds

A simple towel-dry routine after every walk prevents most monsoon paw and skin infections.

2. Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes

Parasite activity increases sharply in humid weather. Ticks in particular can transmit tick-borne diseases that are far more serious — and far more expensive to treat — than the prevention itself.

  • Keep flea and tick prevention on schedule through the monsoon months without gaps
  • Check ears, armpits and between toes for ticks after outdoor time
  • Avoid tall grass and known tick-prone areas during and right after rain
Don't wait it out if you see: lethargy, fever, loss of appetite or pale gums in the days following a tick bite — these can be early signs of a tick-borne illness and should be checked promptly rather than monitored at home.

3. Ear infections

Floppy-eared breeds especially are prone to yeast and bacterial ear infections when humidity stays high. Head-shaking, a bad odour from the ears, or dark discharge are the earliest signs.

  • Wipe the outer ear with a vet-approved ear cleanser weekly during monsoon
  • Never insert cotton buds into the ear canal
  • Book an ear check if shaking or scratching persists more than two days

4. Stomach upsets and contaminated water

Rainwater run-off can contaminate outdoor water sources and food bowls left outside. Loose stools, vomiting, or reduced appetite during monsoon are frequently linked to this.

  • Always offer fresh, filtered drinking water — avoid letting pets drink from puddles
  • Bring outdoor food and water bowls inside during heavy rain
  • If diarrhoea lasts more than 24 hours, or there's blood or repeated vomiting, get it checked rather than waiting it out

When to bring your pet in

Most monsoon issues resolve quickly with home care once caught early. Call us or come in directly if you notice a fever, blood in stool, persistent vomiting, a foul smell from the ears or skin that isn't improving in 2–3 days, or any sudden drop in energy or appetite. Our diagnostic lab can run same-day blood work and skin tests, so there's rarely a reason to wait and watch when something feels off.
