Caring for a Senior Pet: What Changes After Age Seven
Caring for a Senior Pet: What Changes After Age Seven
Most dogs and cats are considered "senior" from around age seven — earlier for large-breed dogs, later for small breeds and indoor cats. Ageing isn't a disease in itself, but it does change what's normal, what to watch for, and how often your pet should be seen. The tricky part for pet parents is telling apart ordinary slowing-down from something that actually needs attention.
What's normal ageing, and what isn't
| Usually normal | Worth checking |
|---|---|
| Slightly slower on walks, more napping | Sudden reluctance to move, or crying when touched |
| Some greying around the muzzle | Cloudy eyes with bumping into furniture |
| A little pickier with food | Noticeable weight loss or gain over a few weeks |
| Sleeping more overall | Increased thirst and urination |
Joint health and mobility
Arthritis is extremely common in senior pets but often under-recognised, because pets adapt quietly rather than showing obvious pain. Stiffness after resting, difficulty with stairs, or reluctance to jump are common early signs.
- Keep senior pets at a lean body weight — extra weight adds significant joint stress
- Provide soft, supportive bedding and non-slip flooring where possible
- Joint supplements can help, but discuss with us before starting, especially alongside other medication
- Gentle, regular movement is usually better for joints than complete rest
Why senior wellness visits matter more
We generally recommend twice-yearly check-ups for senior pets instead of once a year, since age-related conditions — kidney disease, thyroid changes, diabetes, dental disease — progress faster in later life and are far easier to manage when caught early through routine blood work rather than waiting for obvious symptoms.
Cognitive changes
Some senior pets show signs similar to disorientation or confusion — pacing, changed sleep patterns, or seeming "lost" in familiar spaces. This is worth discussing at a check-up, as there are ways to support comfort and slow progression.
